Thai massage vs deep tissue: which should you book?
Choose a traditional Thai massage when your whole body feels stiff and you want to be stretched and loosened from head to toe. Choose deep tissue when you have a specific painful spot, like a knotted shoulder, that needs firm, focused pressure. Thai massage treats the whole system; deep tissue targets the problem area.
What actually happens in each treatment?
In a traditional Thai massage you stay fully clothed and there’s no oil. I press along your body’s energy lines with my palms, thumbs and elbows, and guide you through gentle assisted stretches. It works your whole body, joints as well as muscles.
A deep tissue massage is done on the table with oil. I use slow, firm strokes to reach the deeper layers of muscle, spending most of the session on the areas that actually hurt rather than giving everywhere equal time.
Which one is better for stiffness?
If the stiffness is everywhere, the kind where you feel ten years older getting out of bed, Thai massage usually wins. The stretching opens up hips, hamstrings and shoulders in a way that pressure alone can’t.
Which one is better for a painful knot?
Deep tissue. A stubborn knot in one shoulder blade or one side of your lower back responds best to focused, patient pressure on that exact spot. That’s what the treatment is built for.
Which hurts more?
Neither should hurt. Both use firm pressure, and you’ll certainly feel deep tissue working, but pain is never the goal. I check in as I go and adjust to what your body can take. Say the word and I ease off.
Can you combine them?
Yes. My Deluxe Combo pairs deep tissue work with warm stones, which is the closest thing to having both worlds in one session. And in a 90-minute or 2-hour Thai massage there’s time to give extra attention to problem areas too.
A simple rule of thumb
- Whole body feels tight or heavy: traditional Thai massage
- One specific spot hurts: deep tissue
- Mostly stressed and tired: relaxing oil massage
- Want deep work and deep relaxation together: Deluxe Combo
