Your first Thai massage: what to expect

At your first Thai massage you stay fully clothed in loose clothing, lie on a comfortable mat, and I work through your body with pressure and gentle stretching for the time you booked. There’s nothing you need to do or know beforehand. Arrive a few minutes early, tell me about any sore spots, and leave the rest to me.

What should I wear?

Loose, comfortable clothing you can move in, like joggers and a t-shirt. You stay dressed for the whole treatment. If you come straight from work in something less comfortable, don’t worry, I have loose clothing at the studio you can change into.

What happens when I arrive?

My studio is at 19 Bank Street in Dumfries, two minutes from the High Street. We’ll have a quick chat about how your body feels, anything that’s sore, and anything I should avoid. Then the treatment starts, and the room is yours: quiet, warm and private.

Does Thai massage hurt?

It shouldn’t. You’ll feel real pressure, and some stretches reach further than your body is used to, but I build up gradually and watch how you respond. If anything feels too strong, tell me and I’ll ease off straight away. First-timers usually say the same thing afterwards: “that was firmer than I expected, and better than I expected.”

How long should my first session be?

An hour is the right first session for most people. It’s enough time to work the whole body without feeling like a marathon. If you already know you love massage, 90 minutes gives everything more room to breathe.

How will I feel afterwards?

Most people leave feeling looser, lighter and a little sleepy in the best way. Drink some water, take it easy for the evening if you can, and notice how you feel the next morning. A little tenderness after deeper work is normal, like the feeling after good exercise.

Anything I should tell you before we start?

  • Any injuries, operations or ongoing conditions
  • If you’re pregnant
  • Areas you’d like me to focus on, or avoid
  • Whether you prefer firmer or gentler pressure

If you’re under a doctor’s care for anything significant, check with them first. Massage is wonderful for easing tension, but it’s not a replacement for medical treatment.
